Career
From GP trainee in Foyers,
Loch Ness, we moved to Tiree – nice folk, peace, empty beaches, machair
and the drumming of the snipe. Time was constrained only by the arrival of the
ferry/plane, or neither, depending on the weather, and without surgery
appointments everyone arrived at the end. It was dispensing. Perpetual on call,
a flat island and no trees having drawbacks, we moved in 1981 to Kirkcudbright to
the single handed practice in Gatehouse of Fleet, where I was to remain for 25
years, now with the advantages of neighbouring colleagues, hospital and a fantastic
area. Having always enjoyed out of hours work, I left the practice at 58 to
concentrate on this alone. It was wonderful! A year later our wee house in
France was renovated and paid for, so we both retired.

I married Maggie, a biology
teacher, in 1974, and we have 2 sons both of whom are in the Royal Navy – Stuart
the Executive officer on a nuclear attack submarine, and Rory a mine clearance
diving officer. We were delighted to have Rory’s wedding last month to Fiona, a
Navy medic from Dunblane. During my working life my main escape has been
marathon kayak racing, interspersed with hill walking during the holidays.
Cycling has now replaced the former. The years fly by between here in Dumfries
& Galloway, off in the caravan, and our house in Montmorillon, France. |
