Career
Graduation
was followed by surgical training in Glasgow punctuated by a year at Harvard
Medical School and a year in Dumfries. I was appointed Consultant General
Surgeon at Stirling Royal Infirmary in 1981 and remained there for some 25
years until retirement at 60. I had reached a stage where my clinical and
teaching priorities no longer matched those of the NHS, post-graduate training
committees and universities; time to retire before I reached grumpy old man
stage. I was fortunate to enjoy good surgical, anaesthetic and nursing
colleagues throughout my career. |
Personal Details
Kathleen
and I were married in 1974 (doctor nurse hospital romance) and I am grateful
that she continues to put up with me now thirty five plus years into the
mission. We have two children (one in the army and one in the police) and three
grandchildren. Kathleen and I retired at the same time and life since then has
been a self indulgence of golf, holidays and grandchildren. I do some charity
work for Rotary and Macmillan Cancer support, Kathleen serves on the Children's
Panel. Recent months have been a challenge with our son's development of acute
myeloid leukaemia; he wil have a stem cell Tx in March and should, we hope, be
on the road to recovery at the time of the reunion. |
