Career
After
training in haematology through Glasgow Western and the Regional Blood
Transfusion Service, I was appointed consultant haematologist for South
Lanarkshire (Law and Stonehouse Hospitals) in 1979. I enjoyed developing the labs and introducing
a clinical service but, due to an increasing feeling that there was more to
life than haematology and that others could do better than me in further
developing the service, I moved into medical management. During the 90’s I became part time medical
director for Law Hospital then full time medical director for Lanarkshire Acute
Hospitals and finally in the new millennium medical director for NHS
Lanarkshire. Moving from dealing with
ill and at times insane patients to managing challenging and at times insane
medical staff was an interesting and rewarding experience but the politics
became excessive and I retired at the end of 2006, just after the new Scottish
administration overturned the previous 5 years work. |
Personal Detail
June
(Cathie) and I married the Easter before graduating and have 2 children. Michael is a psychiatrist currently
completing a PhD at Oxford and hoping to generate enough funding to allow him
to remain in academic psychiatry. He and
his wife Nikki (a haematologist!!) have 2 children, Tom age 8 and Ben age 6. Alison is a GP in Invernessand in
2010 married Andrew (also a GP), our 3rd grandchild is due in
May. When June and I retired we moved to
Glenisla in Angus
and have been remarkably busy with house renovations/upgrading/extension and
last year with Alison’s wedding. Now we
are beginning to settle down and are looking forward to celebrating our 40th
wedding anniversary with a skiing holiday involving children, spouses and
grandchildren. In due course I hope to
augment my fishing, skiing and other leisure activities with
a return to learning. |
