Career
House jobs at the Southern
General were followed by the Western Vocational Training Scheme in its
infancy, completing as a registrar in Govan Health Centre. 1975 found us going
to Helensburgh as a replacement partner in a 4-man practice. Alastair
Woodburn joined us a year later following a retirement. Helensburgh has
been a great place to live and work, with our own premises, a cottage
hospital, and the Vale of Leven 10 miles away. We moved to a new
medical centre in 1996 (beautifully designed and built on time and on budget
by Campbell Roxby, husband of Elaine Bryson--small world! The puzzle of
Coxsackie B infection and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome became a research
interest, and latterly involvement with a group at NES developing a mechanism for peer review using videotaped consultations was very rewarding.

Personal Details
Carol and I were married in
1972.Carol was a physio at the SGH, then at Yorkhill and latterly Dumbarton Health Centre. We have three sons. Andrew (29) lives
in Edinburgh with his partner Sam and their baby James, born in September2010.
They are both carers in a day centre for young adults with learning and
behavioural difficulties. David (25) is in third year of a Geophysics degree at
Edinburgh, having already completed a degree in aeronautical engineering at
Glasgow. (Although he feels that becoming the president of the Union was the
highlight of his time there!!). Neil
(23) is in fifth year of a Masters in Civil Engineering at Glasgow Carol and I
both enjoy playing bridge, golfing, curling, gardening and walking our retriever
Sally, although restructuring of a variety of my joints has interrupted some of
these pastimes recently.------Seems that only slippers and smoking a pipe are
missing from the above!!!!
Work was great--------but retirement is much better---no contest!!
