Career
I must have been one of the last GP's in the
country to have gone straight into general practice with no formal training year. I worked for a spell
and toyed with the idea of going to live in Canada. Even sat and passed
the Canadian medical exam! However, in hindsight now,
commonsense prevailed and we went to work in the rural Scottish Borders for a
year ending up staying for 33! Hard work, with a lot of out of hours, even
up to retirement, but thoroughly rewarding in a wonderful area. All the
usual wheezes including cottage hospital, training, video assessment,
practice accreditation, QoF visits and quite a bit of medical politics in
between. Really enjoyed the latter particularly the fun
of negotiating GP payments with the Health Board. Retired from practice just
after the new contract had enhanced our pension but wonder if all
you retired GP's out there realise just how much a bunch of retirees led by Jim
Beatson did to enhance your pension backpayments! Finally stopped working
(forever) for the Health Board last week in practice verification visiting. (The Gestapo!) |
