Career
In 1977, having completed
my surgical training at Glasgow Royal, I
went to Australia for a year – and got stuck ! – I’m still here 34 years later! Had a belated “gap “year
in 1979 aged 32!, travelled in SE Asia, worked for a spell in Kuala Lumpur, and
returned to Scotland via Thailand, Burma, Nepal. Worked for 3 months in
Stobbers doing Paediatric Surgery, before deciding to return to the Antipodes.
Specialised in Vascular Surgery 1981, and am now Director of Vascular Surgery
at Royal Adelaide Hospital, where I work two days a week, the other three being
in private practice. |
Personal Details
Married at the grand old
age of 36, to my wife Noni who is a GP, and we have three daughters, aged 26, 24
and 22. The middle one is currently
working as a chef in various Glasgow restaurants, the eldest is studying Interior Design, and the
youngest Law. Oz has been very kind to me, and I’ve never really looked back
since I came here. Mind you I am still
fiercely patriotic and make frequent
visits back to the “Auld Country”. I read the Herald on line every day - have to keep up with the “Fitba”, and the
likes of the Tommy Sheridan saga. I still listen to a lot of music and
subscribe to the local concerts and plays, and I keep reasonably active with
weekly tennis (crap backhand), cycling,
hill walking, and occasional swimming. We travel a lot and have had some memorable walking
holidays in Nepal, India, China, Turkey and France, with the West Highland Way and
“Cinque Terre” scheduled for after the Dunblane reunion!
Unlike most of you, I am
still working full time,(no state pension here!) with 24 hour emergency call
every fourth day, though I plan to cut down when65!!
Very much looking forward
to catching up with everyone in April. Many thanks to the “organisers” – it
must have chewed up a fair bit of your spare time!! |
