Career
Clearly, there has been a
significant error in the time-space continuum because it is obviously not 40
years since graduation. However, when I reviewed the past years and added the
times spent as trainee in anaesthesia in Glasgow Royal Infirmary, lecturer, senior
lecturer and then professor, it does seem that the error is mine. I have spent
most of my time clinically and academically involved in various aspects of anaesthesia,
intensive care, pain and computers. I was fortunate in being able to combine
all these interests over the past 40 years and to take part in some interesting
and innovative work. I always believed that you should retire when work got in
the way of what you wanted to do and so I retired, or at least I stopped
getting paid, in 2007. However, I still lecture in a range of countries
throughout the world which keeps the air miles topped up. |

My principal non-medical
interests over the years developed into ski-ing, sailing and of course, as an
academic, travelling. Work prevented sufficient time to be spent in these activities
and therefore work had to stop. Joan and I now spend our time travelling
between Breckenridge in Colorado, which at 3,000m with ski-ing up to 4,000m
provides an annual cardio-respiratory stress test, Cyprus, the Algarve and
Thailand where we attempt to at least maintain our pretence of a 36-handicap
(that’s apparently allowed for men in Germany), Brittany where we keep our boat,
and Glasgow. I found that I had relatively few photographs of me, and those which
I had always seemed to feature strong drink. However, I have always believed
that the suggested limits for alcohol intake were too meagre to be realistic
especially when you consider the recognised medicinal aspects and the critical need
for rehydration in warmer climates. |
