Career
After
residencies I spent a year doing general medicine and endocrinology in Prof
McGirr’s unit at GRI. I then went back to pathology, where I had done my BSc.
After having our first baby in 1974, I became the first part-time trainee in
pathology in Scotland, and continued to work part-time until I was appointed
lecturer in 1984. I stayed at GRI until April 2008, and was head of department
from 1993 until 2000. In 2008, I was appointed to a chair in pathology in the
University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. I go twice a year for a couple
of months. I am involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and in
adrenal and thyroid research.
Endocrine
pathology has been the dominant area of my professional life. In 1998, I set up the UK Endocrine Pathology
Society, and I am currently helping establish an Australian society. I have
been president of the International Pituitary Pathology Society and of the
Endocrine Pathology Society, and am currently editor of Endocrine Pathology.

Personal Details
I
married Roddie (Gamma Club 1969) the week after graduation, and we are looking
forward to our 40th anniversary this summer. We have three offspring. Kenneth (1974) is a
GP in Toowoomba, Australia. He is married to Fiona, also a GP, and we have a
granddaughter (Sophie, 9) and two grandsons (Tom, 4 and Caelan, 10 months).
Kirsten (1976) is a clinical psychologist in Manchester and married Rob last
year. Catriona (1978) made a major career change in her mid-twenties, from being
a marketing consultant with the company that set up the Tesco club card to being
a medical student in Leeds. She will graduate this summer.
Hobbies
include travel, walking, theatre, reading, good food and wine, and spending as
much time as possible in our apartment in St Cyprien on the Mediterranean coast
of France looking out at the foothills of the Pyrenees. |
