Career
After graduation I moved to Preston for my house jobs as Anita’s from Lancashire and thought I would spend couple of years here before going back to Glasgow. However after 2 more girls, added to the 2 we already had, and kids starting school, all of us getting new friends and my rugby, we never made it.

After house jobs and various SHO jobs in Preston and other parts of Lancashire I was a GP in Preston for over 30years and was clinical assistant in anaesthetics and venereology for 25years. Virtually all my working life has been in Lancashire, apart from a sojourn into Cheshire for 2 years in the early 80’s, when I was a part time locum consultant venereologist, including a weekly clinic in Styal Women’s Prison.

For 2 years before ‘retirement’ in 2006 I was Chairman of Preston Professional Executive Committee. Since retiring I have continued to do locums mainly for my old practice and am still PCT GP lead for Cancer as well as QOF assessor for the PCT.

Personal Details
I married Anita, a nurse and midwife, at the end of 3rd year and by graduation we had 2 girls, Jane and Suzy. We had another 2 girls, Helen and Sarah, in Preston. Jane lives in London and does freelance work in props and costume buying mainly for ENO & ROH. Suzy, Helen & Sarah live in Preston. Suzy, a teacher, is married with 2 girls, Evelyn & Elizabeth. Helen also teaches and Sarah is a photographer

I played rugby for over 30years at the local club, Preston Grasshoppers, the last 25 years for the veterans team, The Strollers, finally hanging up my boots on Boxing Day 2008. Appropriately, The Strollers are now a walking group and we go away about 4 weekends a year. My most energetic pursuit now is golf; not very successful but use lots of energy.

We’ve done quite a bit of travelling – Anita would like to do more – having been to India, Russia, China, Australia,The States - 3 times -  Turkey, Egypt, Morocco and an Arctic/Norwegian Fjords cruise. Anita still has plans for New Zealand, Canada, South America – probably many bits of it – and anywhere else that takes her fancy.
